Phenomenon: the size of an ArchiCAD Project grows dramatically without the user having created a lot of new elements, stories, Sections/Elevations. The size of the file may double or triple after a new save. For example, a 30-MB size file may become 60-70-80 MBs in size.
Explanation and solution: the key of this problem lies in the way Navigator Previews are generated by ArchiCAD. The Navigator Preview will store and display every single line in the currently saved View. This is the only element type that is stored this way. If a Project contains many lines, and there are many Views, the number of lines stored in Previews can grow to enormous amounts. You may have a Plan that contains tens of thousands of lines, plus dozens of Views of various portions of this Plan. In this case, the number of lines stored in Previews can reach the hundreds of thousands, with the added increase in file size.
Also, if the Ghost Story is turned on, lines on the Ghost Story will also be included in the Preview. Thereby simple leaving Ghost Stories on may result in greatly increased file sizes.
You can uncheck the 'Save Navigator Preview Data with Project Files' checkbox in Options > Preferences > 2D Redraw Options. In this case no element information stored in Previews will be saved with the Project File.
