Running multiple instances of ArchiCAD simultaneously
It is frequently asked: How many copies of ArchiCAD can I run simoultaneously? Although there is no exact answer to this question, here are the factors that affect it:
- what operating system you use
how many RAM you have
what is the size and structure of your projects
what other applications are running
- what type of work you are doing on a project
Provided you have plenty of RAM, and you are working only with small files, so memory is not an issue, (which it usually is...) the following 'barriers' mean the limit:
On OS X ArchiCAD can work with 2048 open files (including cache and temporary files). One ArchiCAD session running idle works with cca. 200-250 files, which grows as you work with a file, and open views, layouts, etc...Roughly speaking, you will probably be able to run 5-6 parallel session, but ONLY if the files are not too big.
On XP , the limit in many cases the number of GDI objects the system can handle (GDI objects are user interface objects, like an icon or a button). Typically, ArchiCAD will use 1000-1500 GDIs, and- although there is no set limit to this around 6000-7000 icons may start disappearing in ArchiCAD.
All in all, you can¹t really say how many parallel ArrchiCAD sessions you can run, it all depends on many factors, but we would not recommend running more than 4. That should be enough for any type of work. If you work with really large files, don¹t run more than one or occasionally two, when you are updating drawings or work with a hotlink.
